A low email open rate means few recipients opened your email. A rate below 15% is often considered low in most industries. You should analyze your email strategy if your open rate falls below this range. Low open rates suggest your subject lines lack appeal. Low open rates may also indicate poor targeting of your audience. You should focus on sending relevant and personalized content. You should avoid spammy or unclear subject lines. Your sender reputation can also affect open rates. You should ensure your email list is clean and updated. Low open rates require adjustments to improve engagement.

Just like the poster said, email marketers should ensure that they are getting at least 50% opening rate to show that they are really doing it right. Anything that falls below 15% shows that the email marketers are not doing it right. Not doing it right may include not writing the contents in a way that will capture the attention of the audience. Also, it may be not targeting the right audience. Or targeting them at the wrong time.

You mentioned sender reputation, which is really important but often overlooked. If your domain or IP gets flagged for sending too many emails too quickly, you'll end up in spam folders without even knowing it. This can happen if you suddenly start emailing a large list after being inactive, or if you buy email lists instead of building them organically. Authentication settings like SPF and DKIM records also matter for deliverability. Sometimes low open rates aren't about your content at all - people just aren't seeing your emails.

I feel a low email open rate is typically anything below 15–20 percent, though it depends on your niche and type of email. Low open rates suggest that subscribers aren't noticing or engaging with your emails. To improve, you can focus on better subject lines, sending at optimal times, and keeping your subscriber list active and relevant.

As said by others already that if the open rate falls between 15 to 20% then it is considered low open rate, that's true. So what you should do is to ensure send cold email and your first line personalization statement is with strong hook or curiosity because this determines whether a person will open an email or not.
