I am dealing with a client who signed off on every deliverable then disputed the payment two weeks later. I am gathering contracts messages and timestamped approvals to fight the chargeback with the platform and bank. I am learning that approval screenshots and milestone releases matter more than goodwill. I am switching to escrow and partial upfront payments to protect cash flow. Chargebacks hit harder than scope creep in freelance.

The question I want to ask you guys is that What happens when freelance clients use chargebacks after project approval and you already closed the project files?

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you're facing with your client using chargebacks despite approving the deliverables. It's unfortunate when freelancers have to deal with such disputes after putting in effort and completing the work as agreed.

After a client initiates a chargeback following project approval, the platform or bank will typically investigate the dispute. This investigation may involve reviewing evidence such as contracts, messages, timestamps of approvals, and any other documentation you provide to support your case.

If you can provide clear evidence that the client approved the deliverables and that the project was completed as per the agreed terms, you stand a better chance of winning the chargeback dispute. The platform or bank will assess the information provided by both parties before making a decision.

In cases where you have closed the project files already, it's important to ensure you have backups of all relevant documentation and communication that can be used as evidence to support your case during the chargeback dispute process.

Moving forward, opting for escrow payments and partial upfront deposits can help mitigate the risk of chargebacks and protect your cash flow. By setting up such payment structures, you can ensure that you receive a portion of the payment upfront and the remaining amount upon project completion, reducing the impact of any potential chargebacks.

It's essential to prioritize protecting yourself and your business against such situations by having clear contracts, meticulous documentation, and secure payment arrangements to safeguard your work and financial interests in your freelance projects.
