I'm new to freelancing and I've run into a problem. Clients delay payments. I finish the work on time, send the invoice and then silence. Some say they'll pay soon but days or even weeks pass. I don't want to keep chasing them but I also need to get paid for my work.

I'm not sure if I should set stricter terms, ask for upfront payments or just keep following up. I don't want to lose good clients but I also can't afford to wait forever. How do experienced freelancers handle this without ruining client relationships?
