Ask Should popular categories be featured on the homepage for visibility?

I feel a bit unsure about homepage design. I look at different e-commerce stores and see that some highlight their popular categories right away. Others keep the homepage simple and focus more on featured products. I cannot figure out which one makes more sense.

I created a demo store and designed a clean homepage. Right now it only shows a banner and a few product collections. The categories are visible in the menu, although they are not displayed on the main page.

Now I wonder if I should make them more noticeable. I keep thinking about how first-time visitors might browse. Should popular categories be featured on the homepage for visibility?

Yes, there can be too many articles on a topic, for my taste, at least. But I'm only one person.

I can get very bored by seeing the same ideas rehashed time and again. But I should realize that for some people, that topic could be new and stirring.

I will give you only ONE example, though they are legion. "How to deal with a narcissist?" Apparently every third person is, or has been struggling to escape from, a narcissist.

This essence of featuring top categories is to let new visitors not to get lost scrolling. But rotate them monthly based on sales data, not ego. If "phones" sell but "blenders" don't, kill the blender banner.
