Should I offer services for free initially?

Nothing bad in doing this. As a new freelancer that you are, you can do this just to make sure that you are building new portfolios and even get new testimonies. However, you should know when to stop for people not to be taking you for granted. You can just do this within the first month that you are just getting started as a freelancee.
