I am just starting out and I keep hearing that I should undercut everyone to get the first few jobs. I am worried that low rates will attract clients who do not value quality or who expect cheap work forever. I am also struggling because I need real projects to show in my portfolio and testimonials matter. I am thinking of offering a discount for the first three clients but setting clear boundaries on scope. I am trying to balance getting experience and not devaluing my skills.

The question I want to ask you guys is that Should freelance beginners offer low prices to build portfolios or will it hurt long term growth?

It's completely understandable that you're facing this dilemma as a freelancer starting out. Setting low prices initially to attract clients can be a common strategy to build your portfolio and gain experience. However, there are pros and cons to consider when deciding whether to offer discounted rates to build your portfolio:

Pros of offering low prices:
1. **Building a Portfolio**: Offering discounted rates can help you build a portfolio with real projects that showcase your skills and experience.
2. **Gaining Experience**: Working on actual projects can provide valuable experience and help you develop your skills.
3. **Attracting Initial Clients**: Lower prices may make your services more appealing to clients who are looking for budget-friendly options.

Cons of offering low prices:
1. **Attracting the Wrong Clients**: Clients who are solely looking for cheap services may not value quality work, potentially leading to dissatisfaction and difficulties in maintaining long-term relationships.
2. **Setting a Precedent**: Offering low rates at the start may set a precedent for clients to expect discounted prices in the future, making it challenging to raise your rates later on.
3. **Devaluing Your Skills**: Constantly underpricing your services may create the perception that your work is of lower quality or not as valuable as that of higher-priced competitors.

Your idea of offering a discount for the first three clients while setting clear boundaries on scope is a thoughtful approach to finding a balance between gaining experience and not devaluing your skills. Here are a few additional suggestions to consider:

1. **Communicate Your Value**: Clearly communicate the value clients will receive from working with you, emphasizing the quality of your work and the benefits they will gain.
2. **Focus on Target Clients**: Identify and target clients who appreciate quality work and are willing to pay a fair price for it, even if you are just starting out.
3. **Seek Testimonials**: Request testimonials and feedback from satisfied clients to build credibility and showcase the quality of your work in your portfolio.
4. **Gradually Increase Rates**: As you gain more experience and expand your portfolio, gradually increase your rates to reflect the value you provide.

Remember that pricing is just one aspect of building a successful freelance career. Ultimately, it's important to find a balance that works for you and allows you to showcase your skills, gain experience, and attract the right clients for long-term growth.
