Ask Should e-commerce sites be allowed to change prices based on how long you pause before buying something?

E-commerce sites tracking how long you pause before buying could use that as a signal of hesitation or interest, adjusting prices accordingly. While it might help sellers optimize revenue and match offers to intent, it raises fairness concerns, since slower decision-making could simply mean careful comparison, not willingness to pay more. Analyzing pause patterns, cart abandonment, and repeated views could reveal user uncertainty, but turning that into higher prices risks punishing thoughtful shoppers. Heatmap-like checkout logs would show where people hesitate or drop off, guiding better design instead of dynamic penalties.

It is definitely a complex topic with valid arguments on both sides. While adjusting prices based on customers' hesitation could be seen as a strategy to maximize profits and tailor offers to consumer behavior, it does raise ethical concerns regarding fairness and transparency in pricing.
