I work as a video editor and graphic designer. I am reviewing a client contract that bans me from showing any edited clips forever even for my portfolio. I am earning good pay but the lifetime clause feels extreme for simple edits. I am asking to limit the NDA to two years and exclude reels for self promotion. I am walking away when clients refuse any changes. I believe that Protecting ideas matters but blocking all future work does not.

The question I want to ask is that Should a freelance video editor sign restrictive lifetime NDA documents that prevent career growth long after the project ends?

As a freelance video editor and graphic designer, it's crucial to carefully consider any NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) clauses in client contracts, especially those with lifetime restrictions. While it's understandable that clients may want to protect their intellectual property and ideas, agreeing to an overly restrictive NDA could indeed impede your career growth in the long run.

A lifetime NDA that bans you from showcasing any edited clips in your portfolio can have significant implications on your ability to attract new clients and showcase your skills and expertise. Limiting your ability to display your work could make it harder for potential clients to assess your capabilities and may limit opportunities for future projects. Additionally, being unable to use edited clips for self-promotion through showreels or portfolio pieces could hinder your professional development and networking opportunities.

Your suggestion to limit the NDA duration to two years and to exclude the restriction on using edited clips for self-promotion seems reasonable. This compromise would strike a balance between protecting the client's interests and allowing you to continue building your portfolio and advancing your career. It's important to advocate for terms that are fair and allow you to showcase your work within reasonable boundaries.

Walking away from clients who are unwilling to negotiate or compromise on restrictive NDA terms demonstrates your commitment to upholding your professional integrity and protecting your future career prospects. Ultimately, as a freelancer, it's crucial to evaluate any NDA agreements carefully, consider the long-term implications on your career growth, and assert your rights to ensure a fair and mutually beneficial working relationship with clients.
