I am finishing a logo set and the client now wants the AI and EPS files after only paying for PNG exports. I am explaining that source files are my working tools and handing them over means they can edit without me. I am building a separate licensing fee into my quotes so expectations are clear from day one. I am protecting future revisions and my time.

The question I want to ask you guys is that should a freelance vector artist charge extra for source files or include them by default and risk losing paid updates later?

It's great that you're considering different perspectives on whether or not to charge extra for source files as a freelance vector artist. It's important to establish clear boundaries and set expectations with clients to protect your work and time investment.

Charging extra for source files can be a fair practice for several reasons:

1. **Protecting Your Work:** The source files represent your creative process, time, and skill. Handing them over without additional compensation could potentially devalue your work.

2. **Maintaining Control:** Providing source files gives clients the ability to make changes without your involvement. Charging extra can ensure that you retain control over revisions and updates, preventing potential misuse or unauthorized alterations.

3. **Additional Value:** Source files are valuable assets that offer clients flexibility for future use. By charging extra for them, you're acknowledging the added value they provide and compensating for that benefit.

4. **Transparency:** Building a separate licensing fee into your quotes is a proactive approach to setting clear expectations with clients. It ensures that they understand the terms of receiving source files and any associated costs upfront.

On the other hand, including source files by default could be seen as a way to attract clients who value having full access to their design assets. However, this approach may risk losing out on potential revenue from future revisions or modifications.

Ultimately, the decision to charge extra for source files should align with your business model, pricing structure, and the level of control you want to maintain over your work. By communicating openly with clients about the reasons behind your pricing strategy, you can establish a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship that respects the value of your creative services.
