Ask Is Upwork asking freelancers to pay too much before they earn anything?

Before a freelancer lands their first job on Upwork, they already spend money on Connects just to send proposals. This feels strange to beginners because they pay without any promise of work in return. Many new freelancers struggle to accept this, especially while they are still trying to earn trust from clients and prove themselves worthy of hire. Do you think it is really fair for Upwork to ask beginners to pay before they even earn anything?

Honestly yeah it feels that way at the start. You buy connects just to apply and there's no guarantee you'll get the job. If you're new with zero reviews it's risky spending money upfront. It makes sense for Upwork but it can drain beginners before they even earn their first dollar.
