Search engine marketing is one of the aspects of digital marketing that helps business to attract target audience for any online business.

There are different branches of search engine marketing. I got to know about search engine marketing when I want to list my business on Google my business pages and I want you to rank higher on the first page.

Search engine optimization is purely for attracting organic traffic from Google search engine to a website online. So I want to ask you that is SEO the same thing as SEM?

There is different between SEO and SEM, and the difference is clear. For SEO, the traffic generated here is organic. This means the traffic intentionally search the SERPs to get to the whichever website that's using SEO. Unlike SEM when users need to pay the ads management in order to get their website promoted. The traffic generated here is inorganic as the people get their for clicking on the ads shown to them on their websites.

From my experience, SEO and SEM are connected but not the same thing. SEO is all about optimizing your website to rank higher naturally in search results, while SEM usually means paid search marketing and can also include SEO in some definitions. Think of SEM as the overall plan to get traffic from search engines, and SEO as one tool within that plan focused on organic results. Paid ads and SEO together can give the best results, but SEO alone is not the full SEM strategy.
