How many follow-ups a freelancer needs to do before you give up?

Freelancers need to do follow up. You need to make sure that at least you have reached out to the clients quite some times before closing the file. Freelancers may decide to send follow-up emails at least three times. Doing this will surely reveal if the clients are truly serious with going along with the deal or not. If the clients don't give positive response for the three emails, you may close the file. What do you think?
