To be honest, how long you wait doesn't really matter. What matters the most is if the wait truly is worth it. You need to make sure that you are trying your best to make sure that during your waiting period, you are securing more skills and learning all what you can do to secure better clients. Some have waited more than six months before they can secure their clients. Others have stayed more than that.

I remember when I get started 5 years ago it took me almost a month before I could see my first client from the freelance marketplace. I make sure that I remain online forever and I open up my profile for 24 hours services. The mistake I did is that I didn't reach out to many business owners as possible.
