One of the real challenges of freelancing is that work does not always come in a steady flow, and the time between projects can stretch longer than expected without much warning. Some people save aggressively during busy periods, while others try to keep a few ongoing clients to fill the quiet months. There is also the question of whether to use that downtime to find new clients or simply rest and recharge. What has worked best for you when income slows down between freelance projects, and how long did it take to find a system that actually helped?

I think everything boil it down to negotiation. If you discover that a project is going to take you long than expected deadline and it is going to take you more resources there's nothing bad in renegotiating with the client. If it happens that the client is reasonable it will give you a listening hear.
