Keywords are too hard when your site struggles to appear on search engines even after effort. Usually, very popular keywords are highly competitive, so new or small sites may not rank for them quickly. One way to check is to search your keyword and see how strong the top pages are. If big companies dominate the results, it may be difficult to compete at first. You can start with simpler keywords that still relate to your topic and gradually aim for harder ones. This gives your site a chance to grow steadily. What do you think?

If the top results are full of huge brands, government sites, or long-established blogs, ranking will be tough. Another sign is when keyword tools show very high competition or difficulty scores even if the search volume looks tempting. If you create good content and still see little movement after a few months, that can also mean the keyword is simply too competitive for your current domain strength. Instead, try targeting longer, more specific phrases

I think the easiest way to tell if a keyword is too hard is by looking at the competition. If the top results are dominated by big, well-established sites, it's probably tough to rank for that keyword right away. For smaller or newer sites, it often makes sense to start with less competitive, more specific keywords sometimes called long-tail keywords. They may bring in less traffic at first, but the visitors are more targeted, and it gives your site a chance to grow authority before tackling the harder keywords.

If big companies with big budgets already dominate the first page of Google for that keyword, it's probably too hard for you. Check the search results yourself. Type your keyword and see who shows up. If it's all major brands or websites that have been around for 10 years, you will struggle to rank there.

Also check how many words are in the keyword. Single words like "marketing" or "food" are almost impossible to rank for. But four or five word phrases like "how to start small catering business" are easier because fewer websites are targeting them exactly.

Another way to know is check how much work the top ranking sites put in. Click on the first three results for your keyword. If they have massive articles with thousands of words, lots of images, videos, expert quotes, then you know you need to match that quality to compete.

Look at the domain authority of sites ranking for your keyword. You can check this with tools like Moz or Ahrefs, though they cost money. If all the top sites have domain authority above 50 or 60, and your site is new with maybe 10 or 15, forget that keyword for now.
