Ask How do I know if a freelance client is potential or not?

I'm just starting out in freelancing, and I'm not sure how to tell if a client is worth working with. Some people seem interested but never follow through. Others ask too many questions but don't commit. I don't want to waste time chasing the wrong clients.

Are there signs that show a client is serious? How do I know if they will actually pay and not disappear? Should I ask for something upfront?
