I'm new to freelancing, and I'm worried about clients who don't pay. I've heard stories of freelancers doing the work and never getting their money. I don't want that to happen to me.

Should I ask for payment upfront, or will that scare clients away? Are contracts enough to protect me, or do I need something else? I've also seen people mention escrow payments, but I don't know how that works.

I just want to make sure I get paid for my work. How do freelancers protect themselves from non-paying clients?
