Ask How can you use gamified challenges to keep members engaged?

I've heard people talk about gamified challenges but I don't really get how they work. I know games can be fun but how does that help keep members active in a group or community? Do people really stay engaged just because of points or rewards? What kinds of challenges work best? I don't want things to feel forced or boring. I want to keep members excited and involved. If you've used gamified challenges before what actually worked for you?
