I asked myself the same question and did some digging. To make it easier I focused on looking for which traffic sources had the best conversion rate.
When I say conversion, I mean "make sales."
So, I did some digging and found some interesting tidbits. Most of the blogs I read were nonsense. Just, people writing stuff with no real data to back it up. But then I stumbled upon Hushly.com, and they do content marketing and demand capture.
They have a lot of data, and I pulled this from their blog.
Between search, social, and retargeting Social media did the best. with an average of 17.2% Search did 3.1%, Retargeting did 1.1%
And the Highest conversion rate belongs to Facebook with a 20% conversion rate.
But take this with a grain of salt. Because the search was 30% of all traffic analyzed, retargeting had 4%, and social media was only 3%,
Hushly also had a Fourth category called other sources which made up 60% of traffic analyzed. "Other Traffic Sources" Had a similar conversion rate as social at 17.2%.
Other traffic sources included email, AMB and others that were not named.
