Ask Do you find yourself obsessed with email open rates?

In email marketing, open rates show how many people actually click to read the message, and they are often seen as a key measure of success. A higher number usually means the subject line caught attention or the audience was engaged, but it does not always reflect real results like clicks or sales. Some marketers check their open rates repeatedly, sometimes to the point of obsession. While tracking them is helpful, focusing only on open rates can cause people to ignore the importance of creating valuable content inside the email. Do you think open rates deserve this much attention, or should more focus be placed on conversions and building trust? How do you personally handle the balance between numbers and content?

For sure! I used to constantly monitor my email open rates, especially when I first started building my list. I'd get super excited when the numbers were high and disappointed when they weren't. But I've realized that open rates are just one piece of the puzzle. Now, I focus more on the quality of the content and what happens after they open the email like clicks and conversions. It's still fun to check, but I don't let it consume me anymore!

It's kind of like checking a mini scoreboard to see if anyone even bothered to look at what you sent.

If I was running email campaigns, I'd probably peek at them a lot more than I'd want to admit. Just curiosity, like "did anyone care or did this just vanish into the void?" But honestly, open rates can be kinda misleading anyway. So I wouldn't take them too seriously.

I'd rather focus on stuff that actually shows interest, like replies or clicks or real engagement.

It's easy to get hooked on open rates because they feel like instant feedback, but they don't tell the full story. Opens can be inflated by privacy changes, so a high rate doesn't always mean real interest. A better move is to watch clicks and actual sales alongside opens.

I've definitely fallen down the email open rate rabbit hole. There's something weirdly addictive about hitting "send" and then refreshing the dashboard every five minutes, watching those percentages creep up. Did they open it? Did they delete it? That 45% open rate feels like a tiny validation.

But honestly? I'm trying to chill out. Obsessing over opens ignores the real goal: actual engagement. Someone could open my email a dozen times and still never click a thing. Plus, Apple's privacy changes made open rates mostly vibes anyway.
