Do exit pop-ups on blog pages have the potential to negatively impact SEO performance?

We currently have several blog posts that are performing very well in search rankings for a specific national online service. One example would be a post targeting the query, "Do I need a home appraisal?" It's bringing in solid organic traffic, and we want to make the most of it. We're thinking about adding an exit-intent pop-up that would offer users a small incentive—something like "Get $5 off your online home appraisal"—in exchange for their email address. The goal is to increase lead capture without harming user experience. However, we're concerned: could adding this type of exit pop-up potentially impact our blog's SEO rankings or visibility in search results over time?

From what I've seen, exit pop-ups usually don't directly harm SEO as long as they're implemented correctly. Google mainly looks at page content, load speed, and user experience. If your pop-up is intrusive and blocks content immediately, it might annoy visitors, increasing bounce rates, which can indirectly affect SEO. But if the pop-up shows only when someone is leaving and doesn't slow down the page, it's generally safe. Testing on different devices is important to make sure it behaves well.

Exit pop-ups won't directly harm your SEO as long as they're not intrusive or disruptive to the user experience. Google penalizes sites with intrusive interstitials—pop-ups that block content or are hard to close, especially on mobile devices. To avoid issues, design your exit pop-ups to be small, easy to close, and valuable to users, like offering discounts or helpful content. When done right, exit pop-ups can actually improve engagement and reduce bounce rates, which indirectly supports SEO.

Search engines like Google care a lot about user experience. If a pop-up suddenly blocks the screen or makes it hard to use the website, visitors might leave quickly, and that can hurt rankings over time. On the other hand, simple exit pop-ups that offer discounts, free tips, or newsletter sign-ups are usually fine. Many websites use them without issues. The main thing is not to overdo it. If the site is fast, easy to use, and the pop-up is not too distracting, it probably will not affect SEO much
