For quite sometimes now, I have been reading and observing more discussion on native advertising as a new way of getting attention of the new customers on social media. Personally, I don't know what this form of advertising entails. But I have heard about its effectiveness and efficiency when it comes to getting the attention of new customers.

What do you know about this form of advertising? Can you share your experiences about it?

Native advertising is basically paid content that blends naturally with the platform it appears on, so it doesn't feel like a traditional ad. Think sponsored posts on social media or recommended articles that match the look and tone of regular content. From my experience, it works well because people are more likely to engage with it since it feels less intrusive and more informative. When done right, native ads build trust, tell a story, and attract new customers without pushing a hard sales message.

You see this a lot on news websites where some articles are actually sponsored content but they look just like regular articles until you notice the small sponsored or promoted tag at the top. The idea is that people are more likely to engage with content that does not immediately scream advertisement at them.

The effectiveness of native advertising comes from the fact that it does not interrupt what people are doing online. When you are scrolling through a news feed or reading articles, traditional ads break your focus and annoy you. Native ads show up as part of the feed itself, so they feel less intrusive even though they are still paid placements.

Social media platforms use this format heavily where sponsored posts appear right in your timeline mixed with posts from friends and pages you follow. The challenge with native advertising is walking the line between blending in and being deceptive.

Native ads work across different platforms but the execution changes based on where they appear. On social media, they look like regular posts from other users. On news sites, they appear as recommended articles. On YouTube, they show up as suggested videos. The format adapts to whatever environment it is in, which is why they are called native because they are native to that particular platform.

What makes them effective is that people engage with them at higher rates than banner ads because the ads do not trigger the mental blockers we have developed against advertising. However, the content itself still needs to be interesting or valuable because just making an ad look like regular content is not enough if what you are promoting is boring or irrelevant to the audience.

One thing people misunderstand about native advertising is thinking it means hiding the fact that something is an ad. Good native advertising is still clearly labeled as sponsored or promoted content, it just matches the visual style of the platform. The goal is not to trick people but to present advertising in a format that people are more willing to engage with.
