Ask Can pop-up ads appear on a site even without asking for them to be there?

I've been blogging for going on 11 years, daily for almost 7. I have a ton of content on my site and to date I haven't really thought about monetizing it.

I'm a bit embarrassed by the fact that despite over a decade of blogging I really don't know much about the technical behind the scenes of it (I usually publish through the Wordpress app)

Anyway, I've noticed that at the bottom of every post, after the Wordpress generated "related posts" are a bunch of ads.

I did not put those ads there. I've never even signed up with an ad network.

It's a self-hosted blog and I use a private host (meaning not a major hosting service like siteground, bluehost, etc. a guy who runs a hosting biz as his side hustle, so I get personal attention)
