Can freelancing become the “mainstream” work style worldwide?

Many have argued whether it is possible to have freelancing as a mainstream platform. Unfortunately, those that are against such an idea are many. They believe that is not advisable to have it as a mainstream platform. It cannot be depended on. There are many times that freelancers will go without having any tasks even for months. With this, it cannot be depended on as the type to be seen as a mainstream job. What's your take?
