I am a freelance developer and I am teaming up with a new partner on a product. I am writing most of the code and I am worried about ownership if things go bad. I am using private repos and I am signing a basic contract but I am not sure it is enough. I am also thinking about license keys and access controls.

The question I want to ask you guys is that Can freelance developers protect code from bad partners? Thanks in advance for your response.

As a freelance developer, it is understandable that you are concerned about protecting your code and ownership rights when working with a new partner. Here are some strategies that can help you safeguard your work:

1. **Use Version Control with Private Repositories**: It's great that you are already using private repositories, such as GitLab or Bitbucket, to manage your code. This can help ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the codebase.

2. **Sign a Detailed Contract**: A well-drafted contract outlining the ownership, licensing, and intellectual property rights is crucial. Make sure that the contract clearly defines each party's responsibilities and the rights to the code, including any derivative works.

3. **Consider Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)**: Implementing NDAs can further protect your confidential information and prevent your partner from sharing sensitive details with unauthorized persons.

4. **Implement License Keys and Access Controls**: Utilizing license keys can help you control the distribution and usage of your software. Access controls can restrict certain features or functionalities to specific users.

5. **Regular Code Audits and Backups**: Conducting regular code audits can help you identify any unauthorized modifications or misuse of your code. Additionally, maintaining backups of your codebase ensures that you have a secure copy as a precaution.

6. **Discuss Ownership and Rights Clearly**: Have transparent discussions with your partner about ownership rights, licensing agreements, and any other concerns. Clear communication can prevent misunderstandings and disputes in the future.

While these measures can help safeguard your code to a certain extent, it's essential to acknowledge that no protection is foolproof. Therefore, being diligent in implementing these strategies and regularly reviewing your security measures can help mitigate potential risks. Additionally, consulting with a legal professional specializing in intellectual property law can provide you with tailored advice specific to your situation.
