Ask Can a business that depends entirely on one platform survive if that platform changes the rules overnight?

It is a real risk that many businesses have already experienced. Some stores that depended only on Facebook ads saw their costs double when the platform changed how it targets people. Others built their whole income on one marketplace and lost everything when the rules changed. Depending on a single platform means your business is only as stable as that platform's decisions. Spreading your presence across more than one channel gives you more protection. How much of a risk do you think it is to build a business around just one platform?

The Facebook ads thing is real. I saw a small clothing brand go from stable sales to almost nothing in two months. The platform just changed something in the background and their numbers tanked. They had no backup plan. That's when you realize you never actually owned that audience.

People keep building on rented land and acting surprised when the landlord raises the rent. A marketplace can change its fees, bury your listing, or ban your account for reasons that make no sense. And there's nothing you can do. You agreed to their terms when you signed up.

Not every business has the money to be on five platforms at once. Email lists, a personal website, a second marketplace, it all costs time and money. So yes, spreading out is smart advice, but it's not always that simple for someone just starting out.

What gets me is how fast it can happen. You build something for two years, everything looks fine, and then one algorithm update wipes out your traffic. The platform doesn't lose anything. You lose everything. That gap in who carries the risk is massive.

A business can survive for a while, but it becomes very vulnerable when everything depends on one platform. If that platform suddenly changes its rules, reduces visibility, suspends accounts, or increases costs, the business may lose a large part of its customers overnight. That is why many successful businesses try to build their own assets, such as an email list, website, or customer database.

I don't think it is a safe long term strategy. Many businesses grow quickly on one platform because it is convenient and profitable at the beginning. The problem comes when the platform changes its algorithm or policies. The business owner then has little influence over what happens next.
