This is not uncommon in freelancing. There are many times that clients may decide to cancel the tasks for any reason best known to them. If this happens, what will happen? It is always better for freelancers to have a good and sound contract with their clients before they start the work. This will make it easier for them to know what will happen. Ideally, the clients need to pay the money fully despite the fact that the tasks have been cancelled.

If it happens that the platform you are using has a kill fee you are covered for the little time you have spent on the project before the client cancel it. It is very important for you to look for a freelance marketplace that's offer something like this for a maximum protection depending on the time you have spent on the project or gig
