Ask Why do people add things to an online shopping cart and then leave without completing the purchase?

Cart abandonment happens for many reasons, and most of them come down to hesitation at the final step. Some people are just comparing prices across different sites and never intended to buy right away. Others get surprised by extra costs like shipping fees that only appear at checkout. Some feel unsure about how safe the payment process is, especially on sites they have not used before. A complicated checkout process can also make people give up. Why do you think so many online stores still have a checkout process that feels longer than it needs to be?

A lot of online stores still have long checkouts because they're optimized for business needs instead of user experience. Many add extra steps for upsells, account creation, or collecting data, thinking it will help sales or marketing, but it often just slows people down. Others use outdated systems that are hard to simplify without technical work. The result is a checkout that feels heavy, even though a smoother, faster process would actually convert better.

People often abandon carts because they're still comparing prices, get distracted, or lose interest when unexpected costs like shipping or taxes appear at checkout. Sometimes the checkout process feels too long or complicated, or they're just browsing with no immediate intent to buy. In many cases, it's less about rejection and more about hesitation at the final step.

One of the biggest reasons is unexpected costs. Many shoppers are interested in a product until they reach the checkout page and see extra charges such as shipping fees, taxes, or other costs they did not expect. At that point, they may decide the purchase is no longer worth it and leave the cart behind.

Sometimes people add items to their cart without any immediate intention of buying. The cart can act like a wishlist where they save products to compare later or think about before making a decision. If they find a better deal elsewhere or simply change their mind, the purchase never gets completed.
