Is it a must to retain clients as a freelancer?

Ir is not really a must but it is necessary. A freelancer that has worked for a client, and like the results that he got from the transaction, can decide to retain such clients. However, not all clients are to be retained. You need to make sure that you check who you want to retain first before you decide whether to retain the clients or not. If you don't enjoy the first relationship with the clients, don't bother retaining.

It is not a must for you to retain a client after you have finished with your project. If they are interested in your service again they will definitely reach out to you. You need to focus on getting more client for your business to make consistent income
