It's super easy to get defensive, but that usually just makes things worse. I take a breath, read what's being said, and see if there's any truth to it. If I messed up, I'll admit it and say how I'm going to fix it. People respect honesty way more than excuses. If it's just wrong or exaggerated, I'll calmly share the facts and leave it at that. No need to argue with trolls. Then I just keep doing good work and putting out positive stuff.

I cannot even advise business owners to keep on ignoring negative comments as some people will say. Rather, address it. You may decide to tell them the truth if the negative comments are true and you promise to work on them or you rebuff it if those negative comments are just rumour.

Another useful approach is to keep messaging consistent across all platforms. If different accounts are saying different things, it can create more doubt. It is better to have one clear explanation and repeat it calmly where needed. Over time, people tend to pay more attention to steady information than to the first wave of negative headlines.
