There are many reasons why users have to choose SEO over SEM. SEM doesn't convert better. Most times, SEM visitors leave quickly. This is because they don't want to visit the website, but only visited because the site they are being it as an ads.

Unlike SEO, the audience search based on their intention and they ensure they get their traffic converted. It is better to target SEO for someone that want to have lasting result.
 
I see your point about direct traffic being more valuable, but isn't SEM still useful for getting discovered? Not everyone will know your brand exists without some advertising first. You need that initial push to build awareness before people start coming directly. SEM might cost money but it can help you reach new customers you'd never get otherwise. Maybe the best approach is using both - SEM to find new people and then working to turn them into direct visitors later.
