Ask How hard is it to get a job as a senior digital marketer?

Having a really shit go at the moment, and not sure how to proceed. Didn't expect my career to be over at 30.

Spent the last 10+ years in digital marketing. Have been consulting in the ecommerce space the last couple of years.

My network hasn't really kept up in the full time employer space in the time I've been consulting.

I've jumped around a few times throughout my twenties, usually 1 year to a year and a half in roles. Obviously getting lots of questions about that now.

Having a horrid time getting back to a full time role.

Experience has been fairly agnostic, worked for a range of startups, scale ups and a corporate. Also industry agnostic, have worked in ecom, media, tech, subscriptions, b2b. Local and international markets.

Managed budgets up to $30m a year.

I'm a generalist, fairly well rounded with hands on and management experience across the main areas - ads, creative, organic social, affiliates, you name it.

'Head of' / 'Director' roles are few and far between, and not much luck in that area.

Getting plenty of calls for resumes I've submitting in the marketing manager / performance manager space. I've missed out on a couple recently at the last hurdle as they think I'm over qualified (they don't want to pay me what I'm asking for... I guess).

I took a job last year in senior leadership (General Manager of sales). That didn't work out after a few months, so I basically spent most of 2024 unemployed. Bad fit for myself and the employer.

Just no idea where to go from here. With bills mounting up and chewing through my savings, I need a solution. I need to catch a break.

Anyway, open to constructive thoughts. I guess this is a bit of a rant. Not sure my ego / confidence can take being shot down much more.

The overqualified feedback usually means they want your skills but not your salary expectations. Consider negotiating on other things like equity, flexible work, or professional development budget instead of just base salary. Also, reaching out to former colleagues who moved to new companies often works better than cold applications. Your network from those 1-2 year stints might be more valuable than you think if people remember you doing good work.

I don't see hard or easy while hunting job as a digital marketer. When you are competent and qualified, people will still bid for you. There is no alternative to the best. Digital marketers that believe they are competent can easily showcase themselves on different platforms for them to be noticed. However, settling for less should never be in the option. They should endeavor to wait till the best comes rather than settling for the ones that they dont really want.

It's not really easy, but it's not impossible either. Senior roles usually expect a lot more than just running ads or posting on social media. You have to show that you can plan full campaigns, manage teams, and read data the right way. Some companies want years of experience, while others just care about results you can prove.

Getting a senior digital marketing job can be tough especially if you don't have real success stories to show. Titles don't matter much unless you can back them up with clear results, like growth in leads or conversions. Many people compete for these jobs, so standing out means showing you can actually bring profit, not just talk about strategy.

It's getting harder now because digital marketing keeps changing so fast. What worked last year might not work anymore, so senior roles expect people who can adapt quickly. That's why learning never stops in this field. The good part is that companies are always hiring for marketing, so even if it takes time, there's always demand somewhere.

I think it's fair to say that senior positions need both skill and proof. Employers want to see real numbers, like how much traffic you increased or how many conversions improved under your plan. If you can explain what you did and why it worked, that will make a big difference.

Many hiring teams look for people with deep knowledge in one main area like SEO, paid ads, or analytics. Showing that you hqve led projects and trained others also helps. A lot of applicants can run campaigns, but just few can guide a team or build a full marketing plan from scratch.
