I'm working on creating my very first online course. I've started outlining the lessons, but I'm a bit stuck on one thing. I'm not sure how long each video should be. I don't want to bore people, but I also don't want to leave anything important out. I've seen some courses with short 5-minute videos and others with 30-minute lessons. Now I'm confused. Is there a sweet spot for video length that keeps students engaged without overwhelming them? I really want my course to be easy to follow and enjoyable to watch. I'd love to hear what others think or what has worked for you.

How long should each video lesson ideally be?

When it comes to the ideal length of video lessons for an online course, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. It really depends on the content you are delivering and the preferences of your target audience. Research suggests that people's attention spans often start to wane after about 20 minutes of watching a video. To keep your students engaged, aim for videos that are between 5 to 20 minutes in length.

Honestly, the sweet spot for video lessons is pretty short. That's enough time to explain one idea without making people zone out. Short videos also make it way easier to go back and watch the tricky parts without sitting through a whole long lecture. Sure, some topics might need a bit more time, but even then, it's smarter to break them into a couple of smaller clips.

In the context of online courses, the ideal video lesson length is crucial for maintaining student engagement. While there is no set formula that applies universally, targeting a duration between 5 to 20 minutes per video is generally recommended. This timeframe is deemed effective in capturing attention and ensuring that the material is digestible without overwhelming the viewer.

Based on the input from others, it appears that aiming for video lessons between 5 to 20 minutes in length could be beneficial for your online course. Keeping the content concise within this range can help maintain student engagement and make it easier for them to follow along. Additionally, breaking down complex topics into shorter videos can enhance understanding and retention.

When deciding on the length of your video lessons for your online course, it's important to strike a balance between keeping your audience engaged and delivering valuable content. Aim for videos between 5 to 20 minutes in duration to maintain interest while effectively conveying the information.

One thing I can say is that it depends on your target audience and the students you are going to have for your course. If there are people who are looking for in-depth information you will need to put in a great details of content into the video and it's going to be lengthy.
